Quality Young Adult

"Time Keeper" is a great beginning to a capturing YA series!

What I really found endearing about this listen was that we follow a young 17-year-old protagonist, but the theme of the story is to treat time preciously and not take it for granted.

Likewise, it deals with the latter part of one's teenage years as something fleeting, with changes happening that almost feel like never existed. Similar to how Ian woke up and his best friend Kayla never existed. What ultimately can be seen as romanticized, not in actual romance, but as the art form, is that Ian has to rediscover his family history to will his history back. A neat idea and concept, that teaches to treasure one's family and loved ones.

Overall "Time Keeper" is well worth your time, and the narrator Francisco Almenara-Dumur does a good job bringing the book to life.

5/5 from me on all accounts.

Memories distort time

While listening to the riveting Time Keeper I may have gotten a different sense of the theme of the book than other people - I guess it is true that a book's true narrative is formed in the readers/listener's mind, not when it is actually written. Because I kept going back to that one's memory distorts one's time perception. Humans have a temporal range - but we definitely also have an individual one.

Young Adult novels have a complicated stigma, and I am one to usually not like them - but the writing and the narration cascaded my imagination to go places I thought impossible (with the whole subjective temporal range and such). Because of this, this book gets a solid 5 in every category! Read it yourself, you'll enjoy it.

A satisfying debut…

Starnes makes his debut in time travel with this gripping, leisurely-paced first installment in the Saving History series and tells the story of a group of young adults who set on to make a correction to the timeline to save the future from vicious forces.

Strange visions are haunting Junior. History is changing gradually. When Junior realizes the ultimate change in history will eradicate his own existence from the timeline, he decides to go back in the past and locate his mother’s best friend Ian, the person who has the power to make correction to the timeline and set things right. But Ian himself is going through a dilemma of his own: strange things are happening around him; his best friend Kayla is missing; and a vicious villain wants to change the timeline for his own ulterior motives. To save Kayla, Ian must change his own future or risk losing his best friend forever.

With his own diagnosis of ASD and Dyslexia, Starnes is clearly well informed about the real struggles of people with reading disorders; reading a time travel book with its complicated layers of world-building and temporal hijinks presents a daunting task. Keeping in mind his own struggles of reading fiction, Starnes keeps the world-building simple and story’s multiple strands from getting too tangled, making it an ideal adventurous tale for people with reading disorders.

His characterization is done nicely; Ian shines as the protagonist, his gentle temperament, integrity, and sensitivity makes him an endearing hero. Kayla who comes across as a typical teenager easily makes her place in readers’ hearts with her courage and subtle intuition. The friendship between Ian and Kayla and their unbreakable bond is both sweet and believable. Junior doesn’t get much space in the story, but he makes his presence known nonetheless.

The narrative runs mostly at a leisurely pace, though it gets hampered with sudden introductions of new characters and informed backstory at times. However, it never loses its momentum.

Starnes’s simple prose is accessible and his plot full of twists and turns as he establishes Ian’s complex world, successfully raising the stakes of the further books in the series. The cliffhanger finale is sure to have readers clamoring for the next installment.

With its intriguing storyline and fine pacing, the book makes for an engrossing time-travel tale. YA readers (12+) will be rewarded.

What an amazing book. My nine year old has really enjoyed reading it too. He was diagnosed with dyslexia in the first grade and really struggled to read. He loves reading this Authors books and was excited to move on to book two "School Bound"! We definitely recommend these great stories.

Just finished reading Time Keeper by @starnesbooksllc and it was so good. I've never read anything like it before, but I loved it so much. Began off so confused but once I got into it, it all started to make sense. The story line is so different from anything else I've read, and I wasn't sure about it going into it. But I am so glad I gave this book a go. I read though it in a few hours as I needed to know what happened. Will definitely be picking up book 2 as this mystery has only just began. Would recommend picking this up it's such an amazing read.

Wow, what a great book! I felt obligated to put up a review for this man and his book. Cover to cover suspense and drama. I watched him stir around and think and pace and obsess over writing this book for months and months. I bar tend at Overtime Grill and Bar, in Birmingham, AL, he frequented while piecing together this fantastic novel. If you’ve read it and love it trust me he has more books lined up already. GET EXCITED! I've caught glimpses of them.

What an amazing upcoming new author. His perspective on teaching history with a great action packed Novel is great! This really is not just a YA Series, it is for all ages. His creative writing is something new to this century of writing. The way he entwines Chapter 2 with Chapter 7, WOW, NEVER SAW THAT COMING!

I cant wait for the next Novel in the series, School Bound.

Way to go Mr. Starnes.
